The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 arraigned one Umar Yusuf and Ibrahim Ahmed Bebeji, both former clerks of National Orthopedic Hospital, Dala, Kano State before Justice Dije Aboki of the State High Court, Kano on a 3-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust and theft.
Yusuf and Bebeji, between January and September, 2013 allegedly conspired and fraudulently altered information on official revenue receipts in their custody for services rendered to individuals.
An audit report carried out by the Hospital Management revealed that, the sum of N3,331,167 (three million, three hundred and thirty one thousand, one hundred and sixty seven naira) was collected as revenue by the accused. But, the duo declared and paid the sum of N150,314 (one hundred and fifty thousand, three hundred and fourteen naira) to the hospital coffers while pocketing the sum of N3,180,853 (three million, one hundred and eighty thousand, eight hundred and fifty three naira).
One of the charges reads:
“That you, Umar Yusuf And Ibrahim Ahmad Bebeji between January to September, 2013 in Kano within the judicial division of the High Court of Justice, Kano State, while being clerks of the National Orthopedic Hospital, Dala, Kano, committed theft of the sum of N3,180,853.00 (three million, one hundred and eighty thousand, eight hundred and fifty three naira only) which was received as part of the revenue accruable to the Hospital and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 286 and punishable under Section 289 of Penal Code.”
The accused persons pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to them.
Counsel to the EFCC, Musa Isa, asked the court for a date for hearing sequel to the plea of the accused persons.
However, the defence counsel urged the court to admit the accused persons to bail.
Justice Aboki granted the accused bail with two sureties of not below Grade Level 12. The sureties must sign a bond of one million naira each. The accused are to be remanded in prison custody until their bail conditions are met.
The case has been adjourned to October 8, 2015 for commencement of trial.

WWE legend ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper dead at age 61
WWE legend “Rowdy” Roddy Piper died suddenly at his Hollywood home on Friday from cardiac arrest, according to multiple reports. TMZ was first to break the news with WWE later confirming.
“Roddy Piper was one of the most entertaining, controversial and bombastic performers ever in WWE, beloved by millions of fans around the world,” WWE CEO Vince McMahon said in a statement. “I extend my deepest condolences to his family.”
Piper, a native of Canada, rose to fame in the 1980s as a brash Scotsman who was always ready for a fight. One of his most memorable performances came in the main event of WWE’s (then known as the WWF) inaugural WrestleMania.
Piper and Paul Orndorff lost to Hulk Hogan and Mr. T in the star-studded match that also featured boxing legend Muhammad Ali, New York Yankees Manager Billy Martin, Liberace and even some Rockettes. Fellow pro wrestlers Jimmy Snuka and Bob Orton, father of current WWE star Randy Orton, also got involved.
Piper continued to wrestle regularly into the late 1990s, including with rival promotion WCW, but eventually he returned to WWE where he had been making periodic guest appearances until last year. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.
Piper’s biggest fight, however, game in 2006 when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a disease he reportedly beat last November, according to TMZ which said his family confirmed on Friday that was not the cause of his death and he was cancer free as far as they knew.
“I am devastated at this news,” a representative of Piper told TMZ on Friday. “Rod was a good friend as well as a client and one of the most generous, sincere and authentic people I have ever known. This is a true loss to us all.”
Piper is survived by his wife Kitty and their four children, including three daughters and a son Colt Toombs, a former mixed martial arts fighter.
WWE personalities — past and present — were quick to react on social media on Friday, some alluding also to the recent and sudden death of Dusty Rhodes, who died in June.

Female suicide bomber kills six in Maiduguri market
No fewer than six persons were killed and many others injured during a suicide bomb attack at a crowded grocery market in Maiduguri on Friday, a member of the youth vigilance group told our correspondent on the telephone.
The attack, which temporarily stopped commercial activities in the market, happened early in the morning.
The member of the youth vigilance group, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the bomb was detonated by a woman who arrived at the market pretending to buy vegetables.

“The woman had come on a tricycle like every other person to the market. Immediately the woman arrived and saw that she might have to undergo security screening before being allowed to go into the market, she detonated the explosives on her and this left her dead with the driver and three others. Many were also injured by the explosion.”
He added that the trading at the market was temporarily halted as the bodies of the victims had to be evacuated and the injured taken to hospital.
The Information Officer, National Emergency Management Agency, North-East, AbdulKadir Ibrahim, confirmed that there was an explosion at the market, but told journalists to wait a little longer to get the casualty figure.
NEMA Coordinator for North-East, Mohammed Kanar, said six persons were killed in the early morning explosion.
He said, “I cannot give you the exact time of the blast but our men were called to offer assistance at about 7am. We found out that six persons were killed and two of the bodies were mangled.”
