Gold House: Applying For a Job: Why Does It Takes So Long to Hear Back?

Gold House: Applying For a Job: Why Does It Takes So Long to Hear Back?

Applying For a Job: Why Does It Takes So Long to Hear Back?

You’re probably familiar with the phrase “holding out for ‘Mr. Right,” or at least some variation of it. Typically, it’s a mantra repeated by your perpetually single friends, or those who have trouble building and maintaining relationships. These folks are convinced that if they keep waiting, the perfect suitor will come along. They just need to maintain their level of choosiness, even though it’s likely filtering out tons of solid prospects — perhaps even that perfect match.
Businesses are doing the same thing. There are roughly 5.4 million job openings in America, and still millions of people looking for jobs (or better jobs). Yet, it seems that filling those millions of positions is getting more difficult, or at least the process is keeps getting longer and longer. That leads to frustrated applicants, frustrated employees who need to pick up additional duties due to a lack of manpower, and overall economic drag.
So, what’s the deal? Why are companies taking so long to bring on new employees? According to a new study from Glassdoor, it’s a combination of several factors, and one of the biggest is the fact that businesses are unwilling to pull the trigger on a job offer unless they’re certain they’ve found the ‘perfect’ fit.
“In the U.S., average hiring times grew from 12.6 days to 22.9 days between 2010 and 2014,” the study says. “Job interview processes are getting longer, both in the U.S. and abroad. Average interview processes have grown by 3.3 to 3.7 days since 2009. This trend remains even after controlling for differences in job titles, companies, industries, and many other factors.”
The thing is, between the six countries the study took into account, and the more than 344,000 interview reviews from those countries, American job seekers actually have it better than most other economies. The average hiring time is nearly nine days longer in France than in the U.S., for example. As for what is causing so much drag on the process, it’s mostly a combination of the utilization of big data, and new screening methods.
Those new methods, which could include background checks, drug tests, and other things, are what generally has caused hiring times to spike. Of course, there are huge variations between both job and organization type that can increase or decrease average times as well. For example, if you’re applying for a government position, say to be a police officer, you can be sure that the screening process is going to be very thorough. On the other hand, if you’re applying for a low-wage position at a restaurant franchise, it’s probably going to be much faster.
As for why that is, it boils down to simple dollars and cents. A McDonald’s franchise needs workers to do simple tasks, and it’s usually not worth the extra expense to ensure they are getting the ‘perfect’ candidate to run the fryer or not — they just need somebody to do it. If that person flakes out, they can find a new one relatively fast. A police officer is a specialized position, which requires investment and training. If an applicant gets hired on and quits two months later, that’s a lot of money down the drain.
But what’s becoming widespread, much to the dismay of jobseekers, is the use of overly stringent screening processes for positions that may not require it. Do you really need to go through a drug test for a job that requires you do data entry? That could be just one example, though it’s also a matter of employers holding out for the candidate they feel will not only be a natural at a given position or task, but also a natural fit with their company’s culture.
The problem is, that person may not exist. Or someone might see a company’s hiring process takes several months and includes a systematic check of every background detail, and decide it’s not worth it. Effectively, companies can be shooting themselves in the foot.
Glassdoor’s findings show that a lot depends on the position, the organization’s size, and the country you live in when it comes to hiring times. While we have some insight as to why the process is taking longer, the bad news is that there is no sign that the trend will reverse any time soon. For jobseekers, that doesn’t mean the jobs aren’t out there — just that actually getting one is as difficult as ever.

10 Actors Who Nearly Died On Set

1. Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future III

Michael J. Fox

How do you convincingly look like you’re dying while being hung? You actually do it! Fox performed this scene a few times while standing on a box, but it just wasn’t working. So he did one take without it, but was off about the timing it would take to get through the scene. He passed out for 30 seconds, which was about the time it took for anyone else to notice that he was unconscious, according to his autobiography.

2. Tom Cruise in Edge Of Tomorrow

Edge Of Tomorrow

Cruise likes doing his own stunts, but some of them have almost cost him his life! One of those times was for this action film and it was pretty much Emily Blunt’s fault. She was driving a car in a scene with Cruise in the passenger seat when things got out of control.
“I hear him under his breath as I approach the right-hand turn, going “Brake, brake, brake. Brake. Brake, brake, brake… Oh God. Brake, brake, brake. Brake it hard! Brake hard!” Blunt said on Conan. “I left it too late, and so drove us into a tree. …I almost killed Tom Cruise.”

3. Jackie Chan in Police Story

Jackie Chan

If you’ve seen this movie then you remember the huge mall fight at the end. While filming, Chan did all his own stunts, which included the one where he jumps onto a metal pole and slides down while many light bulbs explode around him. This stunt led to him cracking his seventh and eighth vertebrae, dislocating his pelvis, and burning his hands thanks to the lights. The stunt was so dangerous partially because they used “sugar glass” which is thicker than normal stunt glass.

4. Isla Fisher in Now You See Me

Isla Fisher

isher’s character has to make a grand escape from being chained in a fish tank before piranhas are dumped on her. The actress however is no magician and got stuck.
“My chain got stuck. I had to really swim to the bottom. I couldn’t get up. Everyone thought I was acting fabulously. I was actually drowning. No one realized I was actually struggling,” revealed Fisher according to Daily Mail. She went to a quick-release switch and got help from a nearby stuntman to break free.

Margaret Hamilton in The Wizard Of Oz

The Wizard of Oz

You might remember that the Wicked Witch of the West would disappear in a cloud of smoke many times throughout this film. But one of those times went horribly wrong. Because petroleum was an ingredient to her makeup and the faulty trap door she was supposed to use wouldn’t open, she caught on fire from the sparks and was hospitalized for her third degree burns on her hands and second degree burns on her face.

6. Sylvester Stallone in Rocky IV

Rocky IV

Most would agree that the fight scenes in this movie were great, and one reason for that is that the actors really were hitting each other. For the final punch that knocks down Stallone, the lead actor asked Lundgren to hit him as hard as possible, according to The Guardian. He got what he asked for and it led to him taking a trip to the hospital because his heart swelled. He was in intensive care for eight days.

7. Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs Of New York

Daniel Day-Lewis

In this period film, the notorious method actor would only dress in clothes that fit 1863. Unfortunately, this led to Daniel Day-Lewis getting pneumonia. The actor tried to muscle through it since there was no treatment for the illness back in that time period. However, when told that he would die if he didn’t do something about his condition, he finally caved in.

8. Jason Statham in Expendables 3

Neilson Barnard/Getty Images

The action star is no stranger to dangerous scenes, but this one went too far. While filming Expendables 3, Statham was driving a truck when the brakes failed, costar Sylvester Stallone told The Mirror. This forced Statham to jump out of the truck as it careened into the sea. Otherwise he would have gone with it 60 feet below the surface of the water.

9. Jaimie Alexander in Thor: The Dark World

Jaimie Alexander
Rain and metal stairs just don’t mix. This beautiful actress took a tough fall while filming. “It was raining, it was dark outside, it was like five in the morning — and I went down a metal staircase and slipped. It took me out of filming for a month,” Alexander told The New York Post. She had displaced a disc in her spin, chipped 11 vertebrae, dislocated her left shoulder, and tore her left side’s rhomboid.

10. Halle Berry in The Call

Halle Berry

This movie might not be known for being full of action, but filming wasn’t dull. According to Daily Mail, The actress was filming a fighting scene when she fell and hit her head on the concrete floor. She was knocked out and the set closed down for the day. She was rushed to the hospital, but fortunately they didn’t find any lasting injuries.

Dating Security Tips

Dating Security Tips

Tips on how to date safely and securely.
Introduction/ dating agencies have grown beyond all belief especially since the advent of on-line dating in 2000. Millions of people find love via the web each year. As it is now joining an agency was seen as a last resort - fast forward to 2010 it is now seen as a first port of call. Figures released by Google say that in the last 12 months:
• 52% of men and 48% of women have used the internet to find love
• 53% of singles (59% men and 46% of women) say they intend to use the internet to meet someone in the future
• 49% of men and 36% of women stated they would not curb their dating spending in a tight economy
With such a growing market and more and more people using agencies (whether on-line or off-line), some normally sensible singles lose their head when it comes to affairs of the heart. So here are a few dating security tips:
1. Never reveal too many personal details about yourself.
2. Never invite someone you have not met before to your home.
3. Meet, perhaps, for a coffee at a mutually convenient venue.
4. Never have too much alcohol.
5. Dress appropriately - nothing too revealing if you are female, it can give the wrong impression.
6. If you seem to click with a stranger in cyberspace and they ask you for money after telling you a hard luck story – usually, “I want to see you but I don’t have enough money to travel”; “I’ve been robbed/beaten and my wallet stolen”; “I need urgent surgery” or “my mother/father/sister etc is seriously ill and I can’t afford the medical bills”, don’t be taken in. NEVER hand over any cash.
7. Watch out for serial daters. These are usually men (but not always) who use the internet for casual relationships and/or sex. You can usually spot them by checking out several different websites and if your date has been active on a few I can generally say he/she is a serial dater!
8. Lastly use your ‘gut feeling’, if something your date says doesn’t add up beware, it’s probably not true.
By following these simple 8 steps (especially if dating on- line) there should be no problem with safe dating.
If joining an on-line agency make sure it’s fairly well known, preferably with an office address and a telephone number you can contact them on if necessary. Unfortunately there is no Trade Association or Code of Practice for on-line dating agencies at this moment in time. More and more people are signing up to hundreds of ‘free’ dating sites found on the net – be sure that you are posting your details onto a reputable site as anyone can start a dating site. It could be Jo Bloggs from his spare room!
Traditional introduction agencies can offer a high degree of protection. Many check out the identity of applicants before taking them onto their books, so at least you know that ‘John Smith’ is exactly who he says he is. Those agencies which interview prospective members also ensure that the Daniel Kola lookalike you thought you were meeting doesn’t turn out to be Wole Akintola! That, together with an independent, experienced judgment as to whether you are in fact potentially compatible, can save a lot of time, effort and heartache.
